En 2018, la Corte Suprema de Corea del Sur dictaminó que los ciudadanos pueden estar exentos del servicio militar obligatorio como objetores de conciencia. Anteriormente, era básicamente ilegal. Para aquellos que son objetores de conciencia, cumplen el mismo período de servicio en el sistema penitenciario.
