La Euprymna scolopes, también conocida como calamar hawaiano, alimenta a la bacteria simbiótica que vive en su interior (llamada Vibrio fischeri) con azúcar y aminoácidos. A cambio, las bacterias emiten tanta luz como corresponde a los rayos de la luna, lo que hace que el calamar sea prácticamente invisible por la noche
