En la batalla de Tannenberg, durante la Primera Guerra Mundial, en la que los rusos fueron completamente derrotados por los alemanes, su comandante, el general Alexander Samsonov, se suicidó por vergüenza. Rusia perdió más de 50.000 soldados.
